The United States seems to be involved in a never-ending war on drugs. Each year, ridiculous amounts of money are being spent in hopes to successfully ban drugs in the United States. Personally, I feel that banning drugs is completely unrealistic and the prohibition should be stopped as soon as possible. In today’s society, the illegal use of drugs is certainly not disappearing anytime soon. I strongly believe that, with the right politicians elected into Congress, it is only a matter of time until drugs become legalized. Although the act may seem somewhat outrageous at first, the United States’ economic situation would definitely benefit as a result.
Being that Dr. Michael Babula—currently running for Congress 2008 to represent Maryland’s fourth District—also supports the idea of legalizing drugs, he develops concrete positions and practical solutions that are presented on his website, www.babula2008.com. The greatest benefit of the legalization of drugs, according to Babula, would be the major reduction in violent crime. From an economic stance, Babula makes it clear that drugs are considered an inelastic product. Therefore, changing the price of drugs will not significantly change the consumption rates. This illustrates that, no matter what the prevailing price is, drug users will consume the same amounts. With lower prices, the extra money that is being saved may allow these addicts to afford types of rehabilitation and attend various treatment facilities. In the end, the drug users would seek out healthcare help for their harmful addictions while incarceration rates for drug related crime would greatly decrease.
In an article from “The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse,” Roberto A. Trevino discusses why economists support the legalization of drugs. Trevino explains, “Since legalization will likely make illegal drugs more affordable, they argue that this should reduce drug-related crime…they argue that drugs are a necessity to many addicts rather than a luxury. Thus, the elasticity of drugs is likely to be small” (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0978/ is_1_28/ai_83661748). Furthermore, drug legalization will drive prices of drugs down and save money to be used for rehabilitation facilities. In an article written by Walter Block from “The American Journal of Economics and Sociology,” similar points are made regarding the vital benefits that drug legalization would bring to the United States. Block’s ideas coincide with Michael Babula’s when he states that we are certainly losing the war on drugs. Block also reinforces the concept that the legalization of drugs would “reduce crime rates, reverse the potency effect, improve the quality of life in the inner cities, prevent the spread of disease, save the taxpayer money, and generally benefit both individuals and the community as a whole” (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0254/ is_3_59/ai_65348069).
Opponents of Babula, Donna Edwards and Albert Wynn, both fail to mention their positions on the controversial topic of legalizing drugs in the United States on their websites. While Dr. Michael Babula contains a section dedicated to the benefits of drug legalization on the economy on his website, Edwards and Wynn completely ignore the concept of economy all together. In order to make significant and much-needed changes to the economy of the United States, Dr. Michael Babula is the best candidate to choose for Maryland’s fourth district for Congress 2008.

The time has come to end the prohibition of drugs. The reasons are clear and this 2008 vote Babula for Congress in Maryland's 4th District !
I completely agree with the idea of legalizing drugs because of the numerous benefits that Babula has made clear on his website.
Legalizing some drugs seems to be a logical way to end some problems in society and give the economy a boost. Legalization of drugs such as marijuana and cocaine could allow for regulation and standardization of production, lowering the danger of "bad" or "dangerous" product. It would certainly take the burden off of our already taxed corrections and legal systems, and the regulation and corporate production of narcotics could also be a huge source of revenue for the government (taxes, taxes, taxes).
However, to say that legalization would lead to lower prices that would allow addicts to pay for treatment is a.) not necessarily true b.) foolish. If addicts/users are already paying "street prices," why would a company lower the accepted prices, thereby lowering their profit margins? Even if prices did somehow lower, that statement presupposes the fact that addicts want to stop using drugs enough to put their money towards rehab. If all addicts used the money they saved to go to rehab, there would eventually be no more users, or at least a significantly smaller base, thereby destroying the industry.
I think that legalizing ALL drugs is somewhat extreme. This would be a very thorough process that should be taken slowly and carefully. If all drugs were suddenly made legal, I feel like people would just go crazy and everyone would become an addict. Personally, I'm somewhat hesitant regarding this topic.
I agree with many of the reasons for legalizing drugs. It's is obvious that too much money is being spent on the drug war. It is true that many people are going to continue to do drugs regardless of whether they are legal or not. Legalizing certain less threatening drugs would seem to save much burden and therefore solve some issues.
Dr. Babula's stand on the issue of drugs and crime rates in Maryland's Fourth District certainly makes him an amazing candidate for congress. Vote Babula for 2008!
I definitely agree with Dr. Babula's end the prohibition of drugs because it will lower crime rates in the country. If Dr.Babula is elected into Maryland Fouth Congressional District he wil be successful in taking on these issues.
The war on drugs just seems to be a complete waste of money. Babula has the right mindset in order to help our economy. His opponents seems to be weak if they fail to even mention these controversial topics on their websites.
It is clear that the current plan for the war on drugs in America has not proved effective. It has however put many of our youths in prison. Its time to make a change and Dr. Babula is the only candidate who is ready to do what needs to be done.
Babula seems to be the perfect candidate for Congress 2008. His views on the legalization of drugs are really interesting. The fact that neither of his opponents state their ideas on the topic illustrates that they aren't ready to be congressmen. Vote Babula for 2008!
